Top 10: Day Trips From Munich

Munich not only has a lot going for it in the city itself, but it also has the added bonus of being perfectly placed to discover the Alps and beyond. The number of interesting, adventurous and exciting day trips to be had is simply endless – and having lived here for nearly 5 years I still haven’t got anywhere near close to exhausting the list. The true beauty of Munich day trips though, is that they can all be enjoyed with the ease of the German public transport system, which is not only extensive and efficient but reasonably priced as well (great for solo travellers, particularly those who can’t drive…like me!). Here are my Top 10 day trips from Munich to discover first:

1. NEUSCHWANSTEIN

2. CHIEMSEE

      1. Actually, we’ll be headed down towards Munich on Saturday for an appointment and now I’m looking for a nice lake to go to where we can have a picnic/bbq (if the weather stays nice) Any recommendations?

      2. So many recommendations it’s hard to list them all! Are you going by train or car? Train: If the weather is really nice I like Lido BEACH & BURGER in Murnau am Staffelsee, but Tegernsee, Schliersee, Spitzingsee, Ammersee and Starnbergersee are lovely too. If you have a car then Walchensee is beautiful (and neighbouring Kochel See) but less bbq-friendly. If you are happy with a smaller lake near the city then Steinsee is a haunt of the locals! x

      3. I think I’ve decided on Walchensee. I did a by of research and there’s a heart island there and a cable car, not very touristy. Sounds heavenly! We’ll be going by car! 🙂 do you know if we can bbq there?

      4. Good choice – it’s so beautiful there! I’ve only ever gone there in winter hiking, so I’ve never seen any bbq areas. I can, however, confirm that there are lots of lovely places to eat on the hiking routes in and around the lake! Have a wonderful time! x
